Corporate Political Responsibility

Simply declaring environmental commitment in sustainability reports is no longer enough. Companies must take their responsibility a step further, extending their accountability in environmental, economic, and social matters into the public arena.

This information comes from a new report by ADL Consulting, titled “Corporate Political Responsibility: The New Frontier of Corporate Sustainability,” presented on May 25th during the Public Affairs Forum 2023. The report promotes a new mindset concerning the socio-political dimension of businesses.

The publication focuses on Corporate Political Responsibility (CPR), a concept gaining traction within theories related to corporate sustainability. It examines how, for the 18 American companies analyzed, CPR serves as an enabling factor for establishing authoritative positions with decision-makers, leveraging a commitment to transparency and a strong reputation.

If companies genuinely wish to support the state, society, and themselves, they must tangibly contribute to a culture that encourages and sustains political discourse. To achieve this, every evaluation and stance must be based on verifiable data and information.

When grounded in a data-driven methodology, Corporate Political Responsibility can serve as a cornerstone for a new approach available to companies, aiding the legislative process and the development of new, open governance models that are responsive to ongoing changes. The collection, management, and analysis of data—characteristic of Digital Lobbying (Carro, Di Mario, 2021)—are essential for better understanding the political-institutional context, monitoring the activities and positioning of policy-makers, identifying opportunities and threats, as well as assessing the impact of one’s lobbying and advocacy efforts.

By extending the scope of the more well-known Corporate Social Responsibility, the defined CPR becomes part of the dashboard for managers, setting them on a clear medium-to-long-term trajectory that navigates through current turbulences.
